Justice is NOT for Sale

When reading 2 Samuel 21:4-6, I can’t help but think about what’s been going on in our country for the last 3 years or so, concerning the killing of black people. I can call the role, but I won’t, because sadly it’s too long and I don’t want to forget anyone.

But if you’ve been paying attention to the news of social media or the real news, you know the names of those killed, and unfortunately this is what happens; killer kills black person, killer doesn’t get charged, black people protest and create #hastags, killer gets charged, black people are satisfied, killer goes to trial, killer gets acquitted, black folk protest again and take to social media, victim’s family get awarded millions in civil suit.

Now, I’m not saying this in a manner to by cynical or insensitive, but this is usually how it goes down in a nutshell. Right?

Anyway, read verses 4-6 of 2 Samuel 21,

They answered, “Our quarrel with Saul and his family can’t be settled with silver or gold, nor do we want to kill any Israelite.” ……….“What, then, do you think I should do for you?” David asked.  They answered, “Saul wanted to destroy us and leave none of us alive anywhere in Israel. So hand over seven of his male descendants, and we will hang them before the Lord at Gibeah, the hometown of Saul, the Lord’s chosen king.”………..“I will hand them over,” the king answered.

For me, God is teaching us that JUSTICE IS NOT FOR SALE! Not the, not now, nor should it ever be. Dr. King said it best, “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere!”

Long story short, we can’t allow people to be killed for a price tag and those that do the killings need to be held accountable and brought to justice, by any means necessary! Malcolm X said that!!

I’m “HAPPY” I’m Not Perfect

Have you ever had a nagging splinter in your finger or hand? What about a paper cut on your finger? Okay, how about this– you ever had a cramp or a “charlie horse” in your leg?Image

Each and every one of these are nagging and beyond irritating! Trust me, I’ve had my fair share of cramps in my athletic days… not the most exciting time of my life!

Needless to say, just like cramps, splinters, and paper cuts, there are times when we deal with life issues and challenges that are just as nagging and irritating, if not more. Just like those cramps, splinters, and cuts, there are times when we deal with personal problems, struggles, issues, pain, addictions, shortcomings, thoughts, tragedies, and/or people that nag and irritate us. Unfortunately, unlike cramps, splinters, and paper cuts, these irritants seem to never go away!

This is not only human nature, but this is also biblical. In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, the Apostle Paul writes:

7 Even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep[a] me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated.[b] Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power[c] is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

In other words, Paul had his own (thorn) personal struggle, issue, habit, addiction, or cramp that he dealt with! He never explicitly tells us what his “thorn” was, but we know it never left him. It was a constant nag and irritant in his life to remind him of his humanity and imperfection. However, what I like about Paul is, he chose to boast and be glad/happy, in spite of what he had to deal with! He was glad/happy, because he had faith that God would give him the strength and grace to be effective and useful, even in his shortcomings.

SO……..no matter your “thorn” or issue in life, choose to be HAPPY, because GOD will give you all the power, strength, ability, grace, and courage you need to BE who God has called you to BE!

“Give Props, to Whom Props is Due” Psalm 123, 146; Genesis 9:1-17

Today, in our 21st Century culture, it is so easy to lose sight of who/what really matters, and praise people and things that don’t deserve to be praised. In our own culture we praise athletes, entertainers, artists, reality stars, cars, houses, shoes, and you fill in the blank_____. We give so much praise to these people and things, that we begin to adopt their ways and philosophies, and desire to acquire more of those things.

I believe we have it all wrong!!

We have it wrong because I’ve never met anyone who is enthroned in the Heavens, who can dole out eternal mercy when we mess up, who made Heaven and Earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who created the concept of justice, made the properties of food, sets prisoners holistically free, opens up the physical and spiritual eyes of the blind, put the green grass, wet in water, blue in sky, and created humankind in his own image!!

This bespeaks of a deity with authority, creativity, power, authenticity, genius, thoughtfulness, love, awesomeness, and care. This type of presence deserves to be praised. The Lord “did this and done that!” God deserves the praise! We have to “Give Props, to Whom Props is Due!” I Praise God! I thank God! I Love God! God is Great!

Will you Praise God with me??

Think on These Things…Happy Monday

I truly believe, that with God, ALL THINGS are POSSIBLE!!! Let’s Make it Happen!

Job 22:26-30 (Message Bible)
26-30“You’ll take delight in God, the Mighty One,
and look to him joyfully, boldly.
You’ll pray to him and he’ll listen;
he’ll help you do what you’ve promised.
You’ll decide what you want and it will happen;
your life will be bathed in light.
To those who feel low you’ll say, ‘Chin up! Be brave!’
and God will save them.
Yes, even the guilty will escape,
escape through God’s grace in your life.”

Leave the LIGHT On!!

Motel 6 is infamous for their catchy slogan, “We’ll leave the light on for you!” What that means is really not the purpose of this post. I just like the idea of the “LIGHT” always being on! Which means, at any time I decide to stop by a Motel 6 after dark, the light should and better be on.

I’ll be honest, Motel 6 is not my hotel of choice. I don’t remember the last time I stayed in one, desired to stay in one, or considered staying in one. However, after thinking about their slogan/tag line, I’ve realized that the Motel 6 ideology actually lines up with my theology. LOL, that rhymed, and who said rapping was hard.

Moving on….when I read my Bible, Matthew 5:16 encourages us to “Leave the LIGHT ON!” It says, “In the same way your light must shine before people, so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.”

So this is my appeal to you, whether your a Christian, Muslim, Buddhists, Atheist, or belong to the Church of Scientology, we ALL have a LIGHT to shine. To quote Mos Def, “Umi says, shine your light on the world.” The world can truly benefit from your LIGHT! Heck, your LIGHT, could spark my LIGHT. Your LIGHT could help and heal someone. Your LIGHT could inspire someone! Your LIGHT could give hope to someone. Your LIGHT matters!

So, if your a social worker, engineer, preacher, writer, janitor, speaker, president, teacher, student, mother, father, son, daughter, blogger, publicist, athlete, lawyer, doctor, bus driver, truck driver, singer, dancer, maid, chef, poet, nurse, steel worker, coal miner, or

African American, African, Caucasian, Asian, Native American, Hispanic, or

Delta, AKA, Omega, Alpha, Kappa, Sigma, Iota, or

Republican, Democratic, Independent, or

Upper, Middle, Lower, No class, or

just YOU……Do us all a favor and

LEAVE THE LIGHT ON!!!

P.S. Shine Baby Shine!
